History

1975

Monroe Ambulance is established. In the beginning, there were 15 employees and three vehicles. Monroe Ambulance becomes the official EMS provider for the Rochester Red Wings and still is today.

1982

Monroe Ambulance is awarded the contract to provide emergency service to the city of Rochester. Monroe Ambulance also expands its service and places three mobile critical care units in service. These units provide sophisticated Advanced Life Support (ALS) treatment to the patient, prior to arrival at the hospital. Monroe Ambulance joins with Strong Memorial Hospital to provide transportation for critically ill, pre-mature infants. Monroe has ambulances custom made, making it the only company in the area equipped to handle these delicate transports.

1986

Monroe Ambulance employees Peter Bonadonna and Charles Bement are recognized in Albany by the New York State EMS Council for excellence in clinical and didactic skills and also for work performed in the line of duty.

1988

Monroe Ambulance pioneers the use of cellular phones. Paramedics were able to speak with, and to send an electrocardiogram to, the physicians at Strong Memorial Hospital from the home of a patient that had collapsed.

1989

Monroe Ambulance institutes Medic 42 through the selfless efforts of Gary and Judyann Johnson, who brainstormed the idea. Medic 42 provides ALS service to the west side of Monroe County and gains widespread recognition.

1990

Monroe Ambulance and Medic 42 receive the prestigious honor of becoming the New York State EMS Council's choice as "EMS Agency of the Year", in recognition of countless lives saved. Monroe Ambulance starts ALS coverage in Livingston County.

1991

Monroe Ambulance enters into mutual aid agreements with suburban volunteer ambulance corps. This helps the volunteer agencies maintain 24-hour ambulance service. Monroe Ambulance and Independent Living for Seniors team up. This unique program, sponsored by Rochester General Hospital, allows individuals needing daily care to continue to live at home. Monroe Ambulance provides daily transportation for these residents to enable them to remain independent.

1992

Monroe Ambulance is recognized as one of the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce's top 100 businesses. Monroe Ambulance's Medics on Bikes Team program begins operation. Medics on Bikes has provided area residents with rapid response, on-site ALS and/or BLS care at special events that attract large crowds. Equipped with first-line medications and a cardiac monitor/defibrillator, our paramedic and EMT ride in tandem throughout the event site, providing quality emergency medical care to those in need of assistance. In the event of an emergency, we can provide Advanced Life Support or Basic Life Support, stabilizing the patient while waiting for our transport ambulance crew. When seconds can mean the difference between life and death, the rapid response of our Medics on Bikes gives us an advantageous approach to EMS at sites with limited ambulance access. Medics on Bikes has also continued our commitment to community education through staff participation in a local youth bicycle program, and has provided bicycle helmets to needy children.

1993

Monroe Ambulance was awarded the Monroe County contract in 1993 and has been providing ambulance services to County agencies (such as the County Jail and Monroe Community Hospital) since that date. Monroe Ambulance targets its objectives of implementing Total Quality Management (T.Q.M.) - an assurance that quality patient care is a priority. Monroe Ambulance's management undergoes change. The Board of Directors is established and begins spearheading the advances of Monroe Ambulance and Monroe Medi-Trans. Throughout the years, Eileen's three children have learned the business from the bottom up. Today, two serve as the company's Vice Presidents and all sit on the Board of Directors. The Board consists of: Cheryl Fowler, Chief Financial Officer; Tom Coyle, Vice-President; Tim Coyle, Vice-President and Director of Transportation, and Eileen Coyle, President. Monroe adopted its mission statement, which is: "Monroe Ambulance is dedicated to medical services and education. We maintain a commitment to excellence in the delivery of responsible, professional, caring and affordable service.

1994

Monroe Ambulance places Medic 79 in service in Livingston County to provide A.L.S. coverage to the northern half of the county. This is a continuance of Monroe Ambulance's policy to supplement services for volunteer agencies. Emergency Health Care Facility Bus Service Monroe Ambulance's Emergency Health Care Facility Bus Service is placed in operation. Much like a mobile hospital on wheels, our Emergency Health Care Facility Bus currently serves as a vital command post at special events including the Lilac Festival or at incidents requiring a command center. Inside the bus is a rehabilitation center, a treatment area as well as office space for logistical planning during a Mass Casualty Incident.

1995

Monroe Ambulance meets the increased demands of the Emergency Medical Service. Our ambulance fleet doubles in size and Medic 42 begins being stationed in the Brockport Fire Station. Monroe Ambulance installs state of the art Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. This enables Monroe to expedite service to our rapidly growing call base. Monroe Ambulance employees, Donna Ranaletta and Mike Molnar, receive commendations from Monroe County Executive, John Doyle, for service performed above and beyond the call of duty during a major county disaster involving a gasoline tanker explosion. Monroe Ambulance is awarded the Strong Children's Medical Center's (S.C.M.C.) pediatric ground transportation contract. Monroe will provide transportation for the S.C.M.C. Pediatric Transport Program, covering the entire Finger Lakes Region, 24 hours a day. This is a service Monroe still proudly provides today.

1996

Monroe Ambulance joins with LeBeau Productions to provide E.M.S. coverage for multiple events. LeBeau Productions promotes several local festivals including the Lilac Festival and the Park Avenue Festival. Monroe Ambulance becomes the official E.M.S. provider for Frontier Field. In addition to remaining the Rochester Redwings' E.M.S. provider, Monroe becomes the proud provider of Rochester's soccer team, the Raging Rhinos.

1997

Jacqueline Coates, Monroe Ambulance's Training Coordinator at the time and recipient of the 1997 MLREMS Council EMS Educator of Excellence Award, receives the prestigious New York State EMS Educator of Excellence Award at the Vital Signs Conference in Albany, NY. 1998

Monroe Ambulance wins the Safety Council of Rochester's "Distinguished Service Award". This award recognizes President Eileen Coyle's accomplishments as well as Monroe Ambulance's significant contributions to the Emergency Medical Services profession. Building upon the success of Medic 79 in Livingston County, Monroe Ambulance begins operation of Medic 80/Medic 81 in Wyoming County in June 1998. Headquartered at Wyoming Community Hospital in Warsaw, NY, this unit provides secondary response for ALS Flycar, ALS Ambulance, and BLS Ambulance service to the residents of Arcade, Attica, Bennington, Bliss, Castile, Clarendon, Cowlesville, Fillmore, Gainesville, Harris Corners, North Java, Pavilion, Perry, Pike, Silver Springs, Strykersville, Warsaw and Varysburg. Dr. Steven Salhanick of Strong Memorial Hospital becomes Monroe Ambulance's Emergency Medical Director.

1999

Medic 37 Program: Program History. The Medic 37 Program was developed and started in the middle of November 1999. The unit was developed to help Monroe Ambulance better serve the volunteer ambulance corps and Advanced Life Support units on the East side of Monroe County. Medic 37's primary responsibility is to provide paramedic services to the communities in the South East Quadrant (East Rochester, Penfield, Perinton, and Pittsford). On occasion, Medic 37 will respond in to the North East Quadrant (Union Hill, Webster, and West Webster) and into the western region of Wayne County (Macedon, Ontario, Walworth, and Williamson). Medic 37 is housed at the Penfield Fire Co., Station #1, located at 1838 Penfield Road in the Four Corners of Penfield. Monroe Ambulance has taken the initiative over the last few years to develop the only Advanced Life Support for Hazardous Materials program in western NY. The team, consisting of members who have been trained in toxicology, hazardous materials, and WMD above the paramedic curriculum responds with the Monroe County Haz-Mat Team to all major incidents. The team members carry antidotes for toxins routinely encountered in Haz-Mat team operations. They function in a support capacity for the county Haz-Mat team during routine operations providing vital signs monitoring and rehab. When a Haz-Mat member is injured or exposed, the Tox-Medics work in conjunction with several emergency room attending physicians as well as toxicologists to quickly and appropriately manage the patient.
